The Book Nook

Reading is one of those activities that is beneficial for both mind and spirit but also one of those disciplines that is difficult for some of us to make a regular part of our day.  I wouldn't say I'm one of those "book worms" who is always up to speed on the latest and greatest, but I do enjoy this pastime when I actually allow myself to stop and sit with a book in hand.  And especially as I grow older, I am beginning to recognize even more the value of filling one's mind with that which will challenge and nurture and stimulate to greater growth in Christ.

So I thought I'd share with you a few books I have read within the last couple of years that have had a significant impact in my life.  I hope it will encourage you to take time to fill your mind with what is true and nurture your soul as you pursue the path God has set before you.

 Crazy Busy

     by Kevin DeYoung

I believe this title sums up well the life of modern day Christians.  We are always on the go, always responding to the the buzz and ding of our smartphones, always taking on more and more responsibility, always feeling compelled to get involved in this ministry or that ministry, etc.  And the irony of it all is that most of our busyness is "good" - focused on the lost, or the church, or the community, or our family.  What Kevin DeYoung addresses in this book is the utter futility of our crazy busy and yet Kingdom-focused pursuits if we neglect the most important thing in life:  our relationship with God.  This book was both challenging and convicting as I considered my own priorities and time management.  It is easy to be sucked into all the "good" and yet become so distracted and exhausted that I cannot give attention to what matters most to God.  An excellent read which will cause you to think twice about your priorities.

Discovering God

     by Dr. Philip Ryken

In this book Dr. Philip Ryken does a masterful job of opening to the reader the attributes of God through the stories of the Old Testament.  It was encouraging for me to think upon the goodness, holiness, wisdom, and power of God as seen in the lives of Moses, Job, Isaiah, David, and others.  If you want to familiarize yourself even more with the beauty of God's character and ways, then this book is for you!  An added plus is that this book contains study guide questions for each chapter, making it a resource for small group studies.

On-The-Go Devotionals:  Joy and Trust

     by Lydia Brownback

As their name suggests, these books written by well-known reformed author, Lydia Brownback, offer short reads that are rich with truths for women struggling in areas of joy and trust.  For myself, I found them good to peruse after a long day when I didn't want to read too long but wanted to spend the time before bed dwelling upon thoughts I knew would challenge and encourage.  Brownback has a unique way of hitting at areas women in particular battle with every day.  I have grown to appreciate her ability to probe the root issues and yet encourage in the promises and character of God.  Perfect books to grab when you're tempted to give in to doubt and discouragement.

The Unfolding Mystery:  Discovering Christ in the Old Testament

     by Edmund Clowney

I've come to learn over time that when Kathy recommends a particular book, I should take note and begin reading! Little did I realize as I flipped through these pages how much God would use this particular message to change my life.  Clowney does a remarkable job of opening the reader's eyes to see Christ and all his beauty in the lives of those recorded in the Old Testament.  I was particularly struck with the story of Abraham.  Clowney gave me a deeper understanding of the depth of this patriarch's faith and the amazing provision of God through his Son, Jesus Christ.

So here's a list of recommended reading to get started.  I hope to post more in the coming weeks and months.
